Policy Patrol first Exchange add-on to support SURBL Lists
Policy Patrol 3.5 now blocks even more spam with less administration
Portsmouth, NH - August 18, 2004 – Red Earth Software, developer of content security software, today announced that Policy Patrol is the first commercial Exchange anti-spam add-on to provide support for the new and highly effective Spam URL Realtime Block Lists (SURBL). As opposed to RBL lists that include sender IP addresses and domains, SURBL lists are used to check URLs contained in the body of email messages. With the declining effectiveness of other spam blocking techniques, SURBL lists are a refreshing and promising new approach in combating spam and phishing.
In order to bypass existing heuristic and Bayesian filters, many spammers are replacing text with images or including minimal text with a link to a website. However, since spammers must provide a means to be contacted, nearly all spam messages include a URL. Therefore checking the URLs against a list of known spammer domains provides an important additional layer of protection and can be successful where other filtering methods fail. SURBL lists require zero administration, are constantly updated and fine-tuned and most of them are free to use. SURBL Lists also provide specific protection against the growing problem of phishing since they include domains of known phishing sources. For more information on available SURBL Lists, go to: http://www.surbl.org/.
Jeff Chan of surbl.org welcomes Policy Patrol’s support for SURBL Lists: “As with any collaborative spam blocking method, the more widely SURBLs are used, the more effective they will be. Speaking on behalf of the SURBL community, I can say that we are delighted that Red Earth Software has now added commercial SURBL support to Exchange Server.”
“With SURBL support Policy Patrol is adding yet another layer of protection against unwanted messages”, says Mike Spykerman, CEO of Red Earth Software. “Coupled with Policy Patrol’s numerous other anti-spam features including RBLs, Bayesian filtering, header checking, recipient verification (for blocking NDR Spam attacks), heuristic filtering and IP address blocking, Policy Patrol is now one of the most comprehensive anti-spam solutions for Exchange Server and can block over 98% of spam.”
